How to Find a Marriage Counselor that Can Save Your Relationship

How to find a marriage counselor that is suitable for you? You spent your entire life dreaming of what it would like to be married, and when the day finally comes, you feel like you’re on cloud nine.

However, after a few years and countless disagreements, your marriage has seen better days. The vision that you once held of a perfect married life is about to come crashing down, and you are desperate to make things right. However, you simply don’t where to turn. Your friends tell you to find a marriage counselor, but you have no idea as to where to go about finding one.

For many married couples, such a situation is an unfortunate reality. Whether their spouse has been unfaithful, is suffering from an addiction, or is growing increasingly detached, the once-perfect world of marriage can quickly come to a disastrous end. While there are some broken marriages in which both partners mutually agree to break off the relationship, the majority are those in which at least one spouse is still in love, and wishes to stay with their partner. Many of those in the latter category are often advised by friends and family to see a marriage counselor. However, not every marriage counselor is ideal for every couple.

How to find a marriage counselor-Factors to consider

It is important to consider a few factors when searching for a marriage counselor. While a marriage counselor may work for some couples, he or she may not be ideal for others. In fact, the practices of some marriage counselors may be detrimental to a relationship. Some couples may benefit from alternative marriage counseling, whereas other may be better off with the traditional form of couples therapy. If you have reached the point in your relationship in which you must seek out a marriage counselor, you may want to consider the following tips.

Find a marriage counselor with whom you and your spouse feel comfortable

Call around to a bunch of different marriage counselors in your area, and see how they treat you over the phone. It is ideal that you choose the marriage counselor that makes you feel comfortable over the phone.

Find a marriage counselor that seems interested in your situation, and that asks questions that matter to you. If a marriage counselor rushes you off the phone, he or she may not be the best candidate for helping you save your relationship.

Find a marriage counselor through referrals

Ask friends that are happily married which marriage counselor they saw. It is important to ask those who are happily married, as it is likely that marriage counseling worked for them. It is strongly discouraged that you ask for referrals from friends that wound up divorced, as their marriage counselor likely did little to help them with their situation.

Find a marriage counselor that is within your budget

The last thing that you relationship needs is for you and your spouse to go deep into debt trying to save what you once had. Debt often adds great stress to relationships, and by building more debt trying to save a relationship will only cause more trouble in the near future.

Find a marriage counselor specialist when needed

If your relationship is on the rocks due to a particular issue, such as drug or work addiction, it is best to see a counselor that specializes in that issue. They will have a much better idea as to how to approach the issue, and also how to resolve the issue that is destroying your marriage.
